The Parish of Twigworth, is situated in the Tewkesbury Borough Council approximately 4 miles from Gloucester, 7 miles from Tewkesbury and 9 miles from Cheltenham, it is one of the smallest rural Parishes in the Borough.

The three Parishes of Down Hatherley, Norton and Twigworth lie north of Gloucester in the Severn Vale, in the Tewkesbury Borough Council.

The Parishes are distinctly rural in appearance and character covering an area of over 1,300ha with a population of 1,162 (Census, 2011).
It is an attractive area with important landscapes, vistas and natural features.

Twigworth is a rural village split by the A38 Trunk Road, on the one side new housing developments are taking shape and the village will begin to grow over the coming years.
On the other side of the road, beyond the “Settlement Boundary”, rural life continues with unabated views across beautiful countryside, beyond the River Severn and Vale of Gloucester, towards May Hill and The Malverns.

Twigworth Local Centre
The Twigworth Local Centre has a Mid-Counties Co-op, Janes Pantry Bakery/Cafe, Wine Rack, Kartoos (Indian Restaurant/Takeaway) and Mimosa (Hair Salon).

Twigworth has a Filling Station with small shop, a parcel collection point and Skoda car dealership.

Twigworth has a Hotel, The Oakwood Hotel, which also has a bar.
It is currently (Dec 2025) undergoing a major refurbishment and will soon have an additional bar and restaurant, there is a pleasant outside seating area in fine weather.

Twigworth Court Business Centre offers limited local employment and is located on the Tewkesbury Road (opposite Co-op)

Twigworth & Down Hatherley – 1911 Census Summary
Below is a copy of a 1911 Census Summary Book of Twigworth Parish, showing that there was a population of 394 but covering a much larger area than of today … however, a few years later after this Census was made, 15 brave young men from the area were to lose their lives in WW1
Twigworth had a population of about 380 people circa 2020.
In 2017. Planning Approval was granted for 725 new homes for the “Twigworth Green” development… this was quickly followed with a further planning application for 74 new homes at “Fallow Fields and in 2023 another application at “Chestnut Farm” with a further 85 new homes are planned!
So the population has already at least more than doubled within 5-years and will continue to increase further over the coming years.
The place-name ‘Twigworth’ is first attested in 1220, as ‘Twigeworth’, and is thought to mean ‘enclosure made of twigs’.
Wallsworth Hall
Wallsworth Hall is a stately home in the parish of Sandhurst but it is accessed from Twigworth, it is a Grade II* listed building.

The hall was featured in Simon Jenkins (2004) acclaimed book ‘England’s 1000 Best Houses’.
The hall was built on the site of a timbered house from the Tudor period soon after 1740 by Samuel Hayward, as a wedding present for his wife, Catherine.
